Together We RISE: Rewarding Investments through Smart Education

Hello RISE Impact Enthusiasts,

Growing up, my parents instilled in me the importance of understanding and connecting with different communities. Every year, while based in the United States, we would visit a special place our family had in Mexico. These trips were not just about vacationing; my parents made it a point to drive us to the disadvantaged neighborhoods for lunch and activities. They wanted us to see and experience life from a different perspective, to understand that the world is diverse and that not everyone has the same opportunities.

Additionally, my upbringing was deeply rooted in ministry work. Most weekends, my parents would take us to minister in disadvantaged cities, where we witnessed firsthand how others lived. These experiences were eye-opening and formative, teaching me about the stark realities many face and the power of community support.

These early lessons have shaped my commitment to impact investing. I believe that by aligning our investments with our values, we can create meaningful change.

As a reminder, RISE maintains a comprehensive database of private vetted, exclusive, impactful investments that includes everything from startups to established funds and real estate, spanning all areas of impact. These opportunities vary; some have specific participation qualifications, while others are more accessible. We do this because we all have different levels of savings, communities, and can participate in impact at different levels. Either way, as always, let's share this valuable knowledge of values aligned investing with our loved ones, including our children (it's never too early to start!), friends, and broader community. With that said, let's explore this week’s impactful opportunity.

TEACHING IMPACT INVESTING

Family Impact Investment Discussions

Impact investing is about aligning your financial goals with your values to drive positive change. If you’re new to this, a great starting point is to select a few of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals that resonate with you. Here are three to consider that have legacy meaning for me:

1. Quality Education (SDG 4)

Why It Matters: Education is a powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty and fostering sustainable development. By investing in education, you’re helping to empower individuals and communities.

How to Get Started: Look for investments in companies or funds that focus on educational technologies, schools in underserved areas, or scholarships for marginalized groups. Check The RISE database.

2. Clean Energy (SDG 7)

Why It Matters: Access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy is crucial for economic development and environmental sustainability.

How to Get Started: Explore opportunities in renewable energy projects and funds that invest in solar, wind, or hydroelectric power. You can also consider investing in companies that are innovating in energy efficiency and storage solutions. Check the RISE database.

3. Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8)

Why It Matters: Promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment, and decent work for all ensures that more people can participate in and benefit from economic activities.

How to Get Started: Invest in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), especially those that are women-led or focus on fair trade. Microfinance funds and impact funds targeting economic development in low-income areas are excellent options. Check the RISE datatabase.

Ways to Begin Your Impact Investing Journey

Align with Your Values: Reflect on what causes you’re passionate about. This could be environmental sustainability, social justice, or I also love healthcare. Your investments should reflect these values.

Diversify Your Portfolio: Spread your investments across various asset classes like stocks, bonds, real estate, debt, VC, and private equity. This not only mitigates risk but also maximizes impact.

Join an Impact Investing Network: Connect with like-minded individuals through organizations like our very own RISE community.

Encouragement: By choosing to invest in initiatives that support the SDGs, you’re not just seeking financial returns but also fostering a better world.

New Weekly Impact Insight - May 18 2024

🌊Investing in the Future of Wave Energy 🌊

📍 Why This Opportunity?

▪ An advanced wave energy converter is being developed to tap into the vast renewable energy potential of the world’s oceans.

▪ A diverse renewable energy mix enhances energy security and reduces reliance on traditional power sources such as oil and gas.

▪ Wave energy offers a stable energy system with reduced variability and lower costs.

🚀 Mission: This innovative project has a goal to revolutionize renewable energy by harnessing wave power. The World Energy Council estimates that wave power could produce around 2 terawatts (2 million megawatts), doubling the current world electricity production.

♻️ Impact Goals: The approach includes:

Triton-C: A 100 kW system designed for remote or isolated communities and small coastal facilities.

Triton: A 1 MW system designed for large arrays to provide utility-scale power.

Why Should We Care?

🌡️ Climate Crisis: Continuing our reliance on fossil fuels is not sustainable. The energy sector accounts for around 73% of global greenhouse gas emissions. If we don't make significant changes, we risk severe climate impacts, including extreme weather events, sea level rise, and biodiversity loss.

⚡ Energy Demand: Global energy demand is expected to increase by 50% by 2050. We need scalable and sustainable solutions to meet this demand without further damaging our planet.

📊 Economic Impact: The cost of renewable energy has dropped dramatically in recent years. Investing in innovative solutions like wave energy can drive economic growth, create jobs, and reduce energy costs.

Female Leadership: 👩‍💼 Led by a Female Founder

Basic Questions Investors Might Consider Asking:

What is the expected return on investment for 2023?

Are there measures in place to protect investments from significant losses?

What are the leading global wave energy opportunities expected between 2025 and 2030?

How liquid are the investments, and what are the procedures for liquidation?

What growth opportunities are anticipated for the companies within the portfolio?

Investing in this wave energy project represents a forward-thinking approach to renewable energy, emphasizing innovation and sustainability while contributing to global energy security.
