Teaching Impact Investing to Our Next Generation

Together We RISE: Rewarding Investments through Smart Education

Hello RISE Impact Enthusiasts,

Thank you for supporting and sharing our newsletter!

Did you know that the history of women's financial empowerment is stitched directly into our wardrobes? For centuries, women's clothing lacked pockets, a reflection of their economic dependence. It wasn't until the late 19th century that this began to change, symbolizing a shift towards autonomy.

On the financial front, women's progress continued to accelerate. In the U.S., it was only in 1960 that women could open bank accounts in their own names without a male co-signer. Fast forward to today, and we're not just holding our own money; we're directing it towards impactful investments.

Our engagement with these opportunities is clear in the data: this newsletter's open rate is much higher industry average! It shows how committed we all are to leveraging our financial power for good.

As a reminder, RISE maintains a comprehensive database of private vetted, exclusive, impactful investments that includes everything from startups to established funds and real estate, spanning all areas of impact. These opportunities vary; some have specific participation qualifications, while others are more accessible. We do this because we all have different levels of savings, communities, and can participate in impact at different levels. Either way, as always, let's share this valuable knowledge of values aligned investing with our loved ones, including our children (it's never too early to start!), friends, and broader community. With that said, let's explore this week’s impactful opportunity.

TEACHING IMPACT INVESTING

Family Impact Investment Discussions

Over a decade ago, I wrote an article for the Journal of Private Equity titled "Changing the Game of Venture Capital," where I explored a framework for analyzing venture opportunities. In our impact circle, we frequently share such opportunities, and it would be wonderful if we could extend these discussions to our children. Here’s how we can engage as a family to deepen our investment journey together and educate the next generation.

When examining startup businesses, we might discuss several key points:

Financial Health First

When considering impact investments, we would start with the financial basics. Discuss as a family the revenue growth, profit margins, and cash flows of potential investments. Understanding these helps us assess if an investment is sustainable and right for our future.

The Power of Leadership

Evaluating the leadership behind ventures is important. In our talks, we should focus on finding teams that not only have strong track records but also share our family’s values. This teaches younger family members about the importance of ethical and effective leadership.

Making a Real Impact

Our investments should reflect our values and make a positive impact. During family discussions, let's define what social or environmental changes we hope to support. This ensures that our investments leave a legacy we're proud of.

Understanding Risks and Rewards

It’s important to understand the market and identify potential risks. Discussing these points helps everyone become more financially savvy and prepared for any investment challenges.

Planning Our Legacy

Conversations about exit strategies and the structure of our investments are essential for long-term planning. These discussions help set expectations and cultivate a culture of patience and strategic thinking.

By making these topics accessible and engaging in family discussions, we not only share knowledge but also strengthen our collective commitment to impactful investing. Together, we’re learning to navigate and influence the evolving world of venture capital, ensuring our investments matter in more ways than one.
