Investing with Impact. Public and Private Markets - Your How to Guide

Together We RISE: Rewarding Investments through Smart Education

Hello RISE Impact Enthusiasts,

For decades, I've been passionate about understanding the diverse world of investing. Sadly, conventional financial education often overlooks the myriad ways one can manage their money, especially when it comes to combining public and private investments.

No one told me that I could tailor my investments according to my values, or that my financial decisions could directly influence the causes close to my heart. It took years of personal exploration and participation through leadership with private investing groups to truly grasp the potential of my own portfolio to effect change.

Now, as a parent of teenagers, my goal is to streamline this learning curve for you.

As a reminder, RISE maintains a comprehensive database of private vetted, exclusive, impactful investments that includes everything from startups to established funds and real estate, spanning all areas of impact. These opportunities vary; some have specific participation qualifications, while others are more accessible. We do this because we all have different levels of savings, communities, and can participate in impact at different levels. Either way, as always, let's share this valuable knowledge of values aligned investing with our loved ones, including our children (it's never too early to start!), friends, and broader community. With that said, let's explore this week’s impactful opportunity.

TEACHING IMPACT INVESTING

New to Impact/Values-Aligned Investing?

Whether you're just starting out or looking to teach the next generation about values-aligned investing, we've got your back. Here's a step-by-step guide to get you started on your impact investing journey.

Step 1: Identify Your Values and Goals

What causes are you passionate about? Look at the UN Sustainable Development Goals and pick 3-5 that resonate with you. Is it environmental sustainability, gender equality, education? Align your investments with these values.

Step 2: Assess Your Risk Tolerance

This is super important because it determines how you allocate your savings. Ask yourself: given my level of savings, do I have enough for my financial freedom number? For retirement? For my children's needs? If the answer is yes, you might be able to take on more risk. Or, lead with impact focused projects that have a lower return.

How much risk are you comfortable with? Higher risk can mean higher returns, but also greater potential for loss.

Step 3: Educate Yourself

You're already on the right track by reading this newsletter and watching our content. Join communities like RISE to learn from experienced investors and gain more insights into impact investing.

Step 4: Understand How the Wealthy Invest

Google how wealthy people invest and you'll see that there is a significant percentage allocated to alternatives or private markets. So, how do you start?

How to Invest in Public Markets

  1. Choose Impact-Focused ETFs and Mutual Funds:

    • ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds) and mutual funds focused on impact investing are great starting points. These funds pool money from many investors to buy a diversified portfolio of stocks and bonds that align with specific impact themes.

    • Look for funds that prioritize ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) criteria.

  2. Research Companies with Strong ESG Ratings:

    • Invest in individual companies known for their commitment to social and environmental responsibility. You can find these companies by looking at their ESG ratings from agencies like MSCI or Sustainalytics.

  3. Utilize Impact Investing Platforms

  4. Consider Sustainable Bonds:

    • Green bonds, social bonds, and sustainability bonds are fixed-income securities designed to finance projects that have positive environmental or social impacts.

  5. Seek Guidance from a RISE Impact-Focused Financial Advisors community member.

How to Invest in Private Markets

New Weekly Impact Insight - June 1 2024

Let’s set the stage for this week’s impact investing opportunity

Why Sustainable Agriculture Matters: Insights

Sustainable agriculture is not just a trend; it's a necessity for the future of our planet and our communities. Here are some compelling reasons, backed by data, on why sustainable agriculture is crucial:

1. Soil Health and Fertility:

  • Data Insight: Conventional farming practices can degrade soil quality, reducing its fertility over time. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), one-third of the world’s soil is already degraded.

2. Water Conservation:

  • Data Insight: Agriculture accounts for 70% of global freshwater withdrawals. Traditional farming methods often lead to inefficient water use and pollution from runoff.

3. Climate Change Mitigation:

  • Data Insight: Agriculture is responsible for about 24% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Conventional farming practices contribute to these emissions through deforestation, methane from livestock, and nitrous oxide from fertilizers

4. Healthier Food Production:

  • Data Insight: Pesticide residues in food are linked to various health issues. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that nearly 70% of conventional produce in the U.S. contains pesticide residues.
